Despatch of Nursery Trees

Tree Despatch

Our NIASA accreditation mandates the use of quarantine and hygiene protocols to exclude diseases and viruses from the trees, ensuring a more rapid orchard establishment for growers.

Chislett Nurseries is licenced to propagate private varieties owned by Variety Access and New Leaf, and are the sole propagators of the M7 navel.

All citrus propagating material is sourced from Auscitrus or a virus indexed source.  Citrus and Pistachio seed sourced from overseas is only purchased from licenced suppliers and is subjected to Australia’s  strict quarantine entry requirements.

Ordering Trees

Limited trees are available this season, however, contact the office as not all trees are listed on What’s Available section as tree availability can change daily.

We suggest that all orders should be placed and confirmed as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.  Forward planning ensures budwood orders are placed in good time with Auscitrus, and growers are first in the queue to have their stock budded.

Not sure what to plant?  Greg, Susan, Jonathan and Brenton are citrus, avocado and pistachio nurserymen and growers, who have first hand unbiased knowledge on how varieties perform both locally and overseas, and will not advise the sale of a variety that they believe does not have the right market potential.

Call the office or come and see us, inspect the nursery, have a chat and a coffee and sample some wine.

Container Sizes

All trees at Chislett Nurseries are grown in a 4lt poly bag.

Growing Media

All trees are grown in 100% coir, a fibrous material made from coconut husks.  Coir is clean, safe and environmentally sustainable with excellent physical properties.  Coir does not suffer from water-repellent problems or the OH&S issues inherent with traditional composted pine bark.

Disease Control

Our pest control policy for the nursery is based largely on non-chemical methods, and if necessary, only using those that are the safest to beneficial insects.  Our use of Vortex’s that work of a night time catching flying insects, and LBAM pheromones substantially reduces the use of pesticides in the Nursery.

Root System

All rootstock seed are heat treated for phytophora prior to germination.

Care is taken throughout the growing process to ensure trees have a straight tap root and the potential for a vigorous, productive and long life.  Our staff training covers vital areas of  the growing process, especially the need for straight root systems in your young seedlings.  Culling of bent roots and off types at the seedling and potting up stages is critical to the whole growing process.

Budding Height

All trees are budded no less than 200mm from the potting media onto rootstock that has a diameter of no less than 10mm.   By having a standard diameter for budding guarantees a consistent tree size at sale time.  Our high budding height gives  the grower more confidence that at some future date, the bud union will not become too close to the ground and become subjected to soil borne diseases.

Training and Identification

Citrus, avocado and poplar trees are trained and tied to a 900mm bamboo stake. Whereas 1200mm stakes are used for pistachio trees.

Every combination of variety and rootstock is individually identified using a secure coding system.

Tree Height

The tree height of all our trees is a minimum of 800mm. As we grow to order, all nursery customers can specify their own requirements. It is important when discussing your order to specify your requirements.  Our aim is to supply trees that are ready to plant.

Tree Age at Delivery

All trees supplied by our nursery are a minimum of 2 years old from seed germination. All citrus trees are grown in our outdoor growing area and so are already hardened and ready for planting.  Our polyhouses are currently used to grow avocado trees.  These trees spend a minimum of four weeks in the shade house to harden them off prior to dispatch.

Inspection

We welcome growers to visit our nursery at any time, and encourage them to not only inspect their trees prior to despatch but to also see the quality of the rootstock we are budding.

Tree Guard Installation

For growers using our one piece poly tree guard, we highly recommend having the guards installed to nursery trees prior to dispatch. Planting trees with tree guards on them is more cost effective than installing after planting and ensures the job is done at the right time.

Delivery

Delivery of trees Australia wide can be arranged by our staff or organised by the grower. We aim to always meet the needs of the customer and will load trees two high on the pallet. We ask growers to notify us two weeks prior to requiring their trees to ensure we have sufficient numbers prepared and transport can be arranged.  For large orders, we also need a few days notice if tree guards are to be installed prior to despatch.

Interstate Delivery

Chislett Nurseries are accredited to send trees to South Australia and Western Australia.  These states have special requirements.

Trees going to South Australia need to be accompanied by Plant Health certificates and be inspected by a quarantine officer at the border or on farm prior to delivery.

Trees going to Western Australia need to be accompanied by Plant Health certificates as well as be individually treated prior to despatch.

Chislett Nurseries provides Plant Health certificates free of charge, however, the WA treatment incurs an additional charge.

As each states requirements can change quickly and without notice, it is important for Growers to contact their local plant quarantine office to check the current regulations.
